Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social teaching, sometimes referred to as the Church’s “best kept secret,”  isn't so much a secret as unknown. In many ways CST demonstrates how the Church offers its voice on all aspects of human life.  We have speakers who can present on all manner of topics relating to Catholic Social Teaching and they may touch on

Common Good. How can society attain it? We will think about capitalism, socialism, materialism, democracy, human rights, and so on. What does the Church say about the minimum wage? What does it say about unemployment? What does it say about electoral participation? These, and many more questions will be discussed. Pope Francis, in recent encyclicals, has directly addressed climate issues, emphasizing the need for human moral stewardship of God’s creation here on Earth. Climate change is clearly a major challenge of our time and as Catholics it is imperative that we contribute, indeed take a lead, in finding solutions to this huge problem. We will take a look at Pope Francis’ teaching in this area. We shall also briefly examine the world's response to the Covid-19 Global Pandemic, bearing in mind the Catholic emphasis on the common good.

Often referred to as “Catholicism’s best kept secret,” Catholic Social Teaching is certainly no secret, but it is largely unknown. Catholicism is not just concerned with the spiritual realm but also with everyday life as lived on this earth. The Catholic Church has an entire body of teaching on the construction of a just society and on human rights. Catholicism speaks about the Common Good, Solidarity, Subsidiarity, Rights and Responsibilities and much more. Catholic Social Teaching has a lot to contribute to the modern world. The academy teaches CST principles, while also placing much emphasis on putting these principles into action.
